Banteay Srei Guide
Banteay Srei: The Citadel of Women, A Jewel of Khmer Art Guide
Discover the exquisite beauty of Banteay Srei, a 10th-century Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Often referred to as the "Citadel of Women," this temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and delicate pink sandstone construction. While smaller in scale than Angkor Wat or Angkor Thom, Banteay Srei is considered a masterpiece of Khmer art and a must-see for those who appreciate fine detail and craftsmanship. Banteay Srei was built in 967 AD by Yajnyavahara, a courtier of King Rajendravarman II, and later completed by his brother Vishnukumara. Unlike most Angkorian temples commissioned by royalty, Banteay Srei was built by a commoner, showcasing the artistic talent that existed beyond the royal court. The temple's name, "Citadel of Women," is believed to be derived from the intricate carvings and the delicate nature of the pink sandstone, which some say could only have been carved by women. A visit to Banteay Srei is a journey back in time. Take your time to admire the incredibly detailed carvings that adorn the temple's walls, lintels, and pediments. Look for scenes from Hindu mythology, including depictions of Shiva, Vishnu, and other deities. The temple's small size allows for a more intimate and immersive experience. While Banteay Srei is located further from Siem Reap than other major temples, the journey is well worth it. Consider trying some local snacks from vendors near the temple. You can also find restaurants serving Khmer cuisine in the nearby villages.
